ending the silence…

Filed under: Niekon Roast,OMGWTFBBQ,gaming, work crap — Niekon @ 8:02 am

So… it has been over two weeks since the third annual OMGWTFBBQ which for the most part I think was a great success with some let downs in the food department.
Most of the proteins (the meats) went over really well and the shocker that was announced at the end of the roast was the surprise dish that we just called beef tacos throughout the evening. Some dishes never managed to hit the table because there was a clusterfuck happening in my kitchen and I refused to be part of it anymore and I walked out with meats to hit the grill. But I will go into that more later on in the entry.
Kimmie and Frank flew in from Texas for the event… it was great to see them. They came the furthest for the event though there might have been one person if he had shown would have come further as is lives in Florida.
The roast was great… apparently I have a lot of friends who think well of me. Funny, I don’t of them… kidding folks. Some moments were funny… some not so funny. When a younger brother says that I’m not even worthy to wash dishes in a restaurant that bothered me a lot since I got to witness him become a complete prat in my own kitchen to the point of talking down to me like I was an underling. Sorry, but you’re a guest in my kitchen… you don’t treat me like shit especially when I paid for the fuckin’ ingredients. If you bought the stuff then you can say what you please, but you didn’t and it will not ever happen again or else you are not welcome in my kitchen ever again.

Okay… that aside (I will be broaching that subject again in a bit when I am covering some other events from the past couple of weeks)… the week following the OMGWTFBBQ was BlizzCon (a convention put on by Blizzard Entertainment) which Milady, CacheCrash, and I attended. Now that is a clusterfuck…
Cache and I figure that we might as well pick up our badges on Thursday since we don’t know what the lines will be like on Friday morning. How wrong we were. I get there and Cache is already in a line that he says is for us. Wrong… we are in the wrong line as are most of the people in the area. Part of the problem was that there was an information kiosk and a giant pillar that had two or three lines trying to maneuver around them. I was one of those lines. After an hour and moving inside the doors but not further I said enough was enough. BlizzCon was officially off to a bad start for me. There was one person from the Anaheim Convention Center who was stating that lines were alphabetical, but when you had to split lines because there were too many people who’s last name starts with “S” you need to know which line those folks are supposed to get into. She knew nothing and no Blizzard people were trying to correct the lines. There were banisters to separate the lines… in the final five feet of the line. Not smart. So Cache and I bailed and came home for a bit before heading to The Lost Bar for a WoWInsider meet-up. On the way we thought we’d cruise the ACC to check out the lines. No one was there. Sweet!!!! We park at one of the hotel parking lots and walk over to the ACC and pick up our badges and bag o’ stuff then off to The Lost Bar for alcohol and World of Warcraft people. While there I discovered that being a level 70 Druid who is spec’d as Balance (or Boomkin as we like to call it) it a rarity. Even more rare? The fact that I have been spec’d Boomkin since I started playing the character back in February ’06. And then Milady showed up having just gotten off of work… she was tired… so we left and went home for a long day ahead for the three of us.
But before we get into BlizzCon more… the “bag o’ stuff”: one plastic card that contained a Murloc Suit code and a beta key for a yet to be announced game, one World of Warcraft t-shirt (XL), one set of BlizzCon coasters, one “starter kit” for the WoW Trading Card Game, one bookmark that was the beginning of a quest at the Brady Games booth, some buttons, a lot of crap advertisements, and a post card for a map and program to be picked up the next day. Murloc Suit is funny looking… but cool. I need to get photos of my character in it at some point for shits n’ giggles. I did run my character from the furthest point south in Easter Kingdom and up to Ironforge which is about halfway up the map. No mount… no flying… all running and one tram ride from Stormwind to Ironforge.

Friday morning comes along… we have our printed out schedule… and are making plans. Up to the ACC we all walk and see a cluster of people all congregating near Hall A… it is past 9am… the doors should be open. Nope… not yet. Finally the doors open and we allow for people to get in before attempting to make our way into the convention area. We walk into the hall into darkness. Not a great thing for those who had been outside the hall where it was bright and sunny. Milady is thrown off by this almost immediately and I don’t blame her.
To our right is this clusterfuck of a line for Blizzard merchandise. People have order forms in hand but no one can seem to be able to locate someone who is handing them out. Fuck it… let’s walk around before the opening ceremony.
We see another line… this one for the maps and programs. Another clusterfuck of a mess. And yet another Blizzard merchandise line in Hall B that isn’t nearly as insane as the one in Hall A but close to it and at least that one is manned by a Blizzard employee who is handing out the damn order forms. We stay in that line for a short while and decide that it’s not going to get better so we are better off trying to get our programs and maps. By the time we get there the line seems to have disappeared on one side so we go for that side. Got a map, a program, and an hearthstone keychain. Where was my hearthstone last night when I wanted to actually be drinking at the Hearthstone Lounge? Bastards…
Now we are off to wander some more… we hit the Brady Games booth to begin the quest and got another bookmark. Then something about opening ceremonies. Cache had disappeared quite a while ago so I was shocked to actually find him already sitting and a couple of seats by him available. Sweet… so we get the ceremonies underway… Starcraft II… no big surprise… WoW expansion, Wrath of the Lich King… no big surprise considering a section of Hall B has these huge ass banners announcing it. SURPRISE!!!! This is the next expansion. Yeah, and the fact that it was pretty much spoiled a few days prior online was people were digging into the various expansion rumors. It will be interesting though as we are now going back into Azeroth for leveling which will most likely empty out Outlands. Level cap will be raised to 80… talent trees will be revamped again… a hero class, Death Knight… and apparently the first time we’ll be able to have flying mounts in Azeroth.

Now it was time to walk around some more before lunch… and a couple of panel discussions. Lunch was done at the Hilton at Cafe Oasis. Milady and I shared a bottle of wine with our meal… and enjoyed ourselves relaxing with our meal. *sigh* It was nice… ^_^
Back the mad rush of BlizzCon… a couple of panels and then we headed home for a bit to rest and relax before Milady and I headed back up for some more stuff that was too overcrowded for us to deal with so instead we walked around and saw that we could get a sample try of the trading card game (she kicked my ass) and then headed home for the evening/night.

Saturday comes… and we have a slightly delayed get-up-and-go mentality. Nothing overly major taking place until 12noon. A panel about the Warcraft movie being done by Legendary Pictures apparently planned to release in 2009. Should be interesting once they finally get the script nailed down.
then it was off to lunch again for Milady and I… this time we went to the Marriott’s Cafe Del Sol which we had never been to before and actually had a good experience there. Good choices on their menu… and they also had a lunch buffet too. I stuck to the menu while Milady tried the buffet. Another relaxing meal… with no big rush to be anywhere. Lunch was over… and wee bring Cache back a little something to munch on… beer-battered onion rings with a chipotle ranch dipping sauce. And then we are at our next panel… and then time to kill for Milady and I so we had to the bar at the Hilton for some drinks before venturing back into the convention area for the closing event… a performance by Video Games Live (an orchestra) and some other crap. What a treat I was in for on that one. We were informed that seating was limited… doors opened at 6:30… concert started at 7:00. Anyone seeing the problem here yet?
We find Cache who is in line already… this line starts from the front gates of the ACC arena folds into Hall A down towards the main stage set up there… curves back up the side of the panel discussion seating op to where the Blizzard merchandise is being sold turns along the back of the seating for the panel… then takes a turn back towards the panel stage and wraps around again to begin a line going back up towards the back of the hall towards Hall B. There are a lot of people still wandering the show floor and sitting in on the panel discussions. There is no way logistically that they can seat all of these people in thirty minutes or less. I am more than pissed at this moment. We have each paid out $100 for this convention with the promise of a concert performance by Video Games Live. It was not until the opening ceremony that they announce there will be limited seating for the concert. Had I known this I would not have put some much speculation into the concert and possibly not have attended BlizzCon ’07.
I have now ranted to Cache in front of a bunch of people that I have pretty much insulted directly to their faces calling them the ultimate losers who wank off to their female night elf characters on a daily basis. I have yet to drop my letter of displeasure about the clusterfuck of various aspects of BlizzCon but it will be dropped to the president of Blizzard which will most likely go unread but at least I can state that I voiced my displeasure.

This weekend we were supposed to go deep sea fishing with Clinton… but that got nixed as I am still recovering from the OMGWTFBBQ financially. But he came by earlier this week to use my stand mixer to make three different buttercreams for class. In what turned out to be nothing major turned into a pain in my ass for the days that followed and culminated on Friday and yesterday while Milady and I sweated and worked our asses off trying to clean my kitchen of the recent ant invasion. And where were they all going? My stand mixer that was allegedly completely cleaned. We pulled the bowl off and found remnants of buttercream on the bowl and on the mixer. FUCK!!! I am pissed now… the kitchen cabinets are cleared out… and I am now scrubbing all of the cabinets with Comet and water… and while cleaning I decide to scrub the pipes for my kitchen sink too… and somehow knock off enough rust on the bottom of the kitchen sink trap to open up a hole that was draining water into the cabinet. FUCK!!! Shut off the water… grab something to catch the dripping water… pull off the trap and see what we can get done quickly. Sally and I head to the plumbing store… it’s closed so we go to Home Depot instead hoping to find something. Got something about right but instead of metal it’s PVC. Turns out it’s 1/4″ off and would not fit properly. So we had to wait until Saturday to get it replaced.
Saturday comes… we’re out the door before 9am… we find exactly what we needed at the plumbing store. And I get home… install it… and it’s been perfect. Now Milady and I can work on the kitchen the rest of the way. But wait… there are some ants running around on my computer desk. Time to step this up now… and we began a cleaning spree that started from my front door and continued along the walls cleaning everywhere. Computer desk emptied and completely cleaned… Guinness tap emptied and completely cleaned… small bookshelf half emptied and cleaned. All the floor boards were cleaned… carpets that are typically unreachable were vacuumed.
Kitchen finally got to get cleaned a lot more… refrigerator pulled out… microwave moved… stove pulled out. Floors and walls completely cleaned. Fridge and stove cleaned. Kitchen floor mopped after everything was back in place. And now we are in the process of washing all of the stuff in the kitchen to be placed back into cleaned drawers… rubber lining to be placed into the lower cabinets for the pots and pans. Front room is slowly coming together again. Half of it has been completely cleaned and vacuumed. Other half is occupied by a lot of crap that is in the process of being put away. Then I will be done… and will be able to relax for the rest of the day hopefully.

Something we have found while we were cleaning… two cookie sheets and cooling racks in the oven still uncleaned from two weeks prior. This held the roasted vegetables and was tossed back into the oven by Clinton without ever being cleaned. Two weeks later… and they are now in the trash. The expense of the OMGWTFBBQ continues to grow in the weeks following this event. I am not pleased… I have found risotto in places I should not find dried risotto. It was splattered on bottles of alcohol. Milady has managed to step on a piece of dried shallot that cut into the bottom of her foot.

And then there has been work. From the time of the OMGWTFBBQ to this week it has been pure hell for me. I had a ConAgra order for 587 pallets of Wesson oil that had to be made up. Last Friday (the day I’m at BlizzCon) they ran out of tray bodies… our other facility in Memphis didn’t send out enough to me to cover the entire order. And we were also having issues with one of the three flavors of oil which were being received with a lot of leakers. So the oil plant was trying to send out replacements as quickly as possible but was having issues since they too were in Memphis and we are in Garden Grove.
And then I have another client, DaVinci Pharmaceuticals, that we are making these little things for them… then turning these packs into a 3-pack via shrinkwrap… and packing four 3-packs into a case. Well all was going well for the first part of the run since there were 100 of these and 100 of that that. The issue came up when I got the next batch of orders that called for some of these and some of those. No way Production could do this… so they just produced without placing a shipping label on the cartons. Shipping would have to apply these labels later on… which turned into an ordeal of it’s own. I didn’t leave work that day until 6:15pm… just fifteen minutes shy of working a 12-hour day.
But now that the ConAgra orders have been filled and shipped my desk is a lot calmer. DaVinci is somewhat stressful still but not so much now that we are trying to get control of the client in terms of these fulfillment orders. And my other clients are nothing overly major right now. But I am having to train a new person to basically take as many of my clients as possible since I will become the main back-up for the Frito-Lay account in Garden Grove. Oh joy…

and that is about all for now… next Saturday Milady and I are flying up to the Bay area for the day for some sort of family event. Not staying too long… but will be coming home the same day. We are still trying to secure passage from here to the Long Beach airport in the morning and back from the airport that night. The neighbor downstairs said he would take us but he’s about as reliable as knowing that I can’t trust anyone else to clean my kitchen equipment properly. But we shall see… I might be looking for an alternative.

Oh yeah… you dirty rotten bastards!!! You killed my keg of Guinness in near record time… I had it delivered on the 26th of July. It died on the 31st. I have had to resort to drinking other beers… wines… and harder alcohols until last night when we could afford getting another keg delivered. :P

So now I am off to finish my cleaning process so I can try and relax this afternoon when it’s the hottest.

OMGWTFBBQ Top Chef…

So I got the call this morning from the place I had ordered the meat from… one of the items I ordered is out for at least two months and another item they are trying to find another source for. SHIT!!!!

Quick call goes out to ChefHalfblood or whatever his name is… HalfBloodChef it seems… so he’s coming down this evening for us to go over everything again and see what we might be able to substitute for at least one of the items.

I’m still not going to say what the items were that I am now having to substitute… but we are working on solutions and hoping that we can still pull off a great OMGWTFBBQ with or without this one or two items. Just tossing around the menu options a bit here and there… trying not to bring in too many of the old meats from past years in again. And trying to steer away from just burgers and sausages… we really want to blow you away from a gastronomical point and I think we can do it.

A little over one week to go and I am pulling into stress mode. I’ve had a bit over $100 in donations… which was a good help thus far since the meat that was ordered was in the $500 range. We are pulling together some non-food items already… and will be spending this weekend prepping the kitchen and front room for two and a half days of pure insanity. Hopefully the camera will be up for the challenge of documenting our journey… from start to finish.
Then Thursday is basic prep work… get fresh groceries needed for the next couple of days… and work on shit we can do a couple of days in advance. Meat should be delivered that day… and will be scheduling the keg for delivery that day as well. Must drink and cook… :P
Friday is where we will begin the fun part of the process which we will begin preparing anything that can be done a day ahead of time… Friday evening will be enlisting the help of some folks to help out on a top secret project. WrathGlory… CacheCrash… Milady… ShortyVonChickenPants… HalfBloodChef… me…
I think those are enough hands involved on this one for what we are needing to do.

Saturday… the day of… the final day for anything to go wrong to happen because once it starts there is no stopping us. Try to clear up the front room of the final clutter… clean front room… bathroom… start pulling out tables and chairs… hosing down chairs… wiping down tables…
Prep computer for long haul to lower area and protect it from sunlight. Hook up speaker system. Ensure things are working smoothly. Hmmm… where to draw the power from? Maybe move plug for tap elsewhere… and await projector to arrive later in the day. Electrical tape… cannot forget the electrical tape to help tape up cords that might be connected.
Make sure we have some music… selected by me of course because this is something that I want to have fun with ^_~
And of course the final day for cooking and grilling and whatever else we are doing. I do know that one of th desserts will be an interesting one since we cannot serve everyone at the same time… and not quite sure where in the hell we’re going to be making it (inside the apartment I am going to assume)…

Timeline for Saturday:
3pm: event starts… show up whenever though
5pm or 5:30pm: grilling starts
somewhere between 7pm and 8:30pm: I get roasted apparently
around 8:30pm: it is time for the videos for a bit
after the videos: who the fuck knows…

some folks have been asked not to broach certain subjects when roasting me. If you have any concerns on a certain topic… please contact either myself or Milady and we’ll let you know. Seriously… some stuff is amongst certain friends and not everyone needs to know EVERYTHING about me ^_~

that is all from me for now… so until next week, enjoy… you probably won’t hear from me until after everything takes place.

just a little bit…

of bloody pain this morning…

Why, you ask? Because yesterday my dentist dug out the rest of the wisdom teeth that the previous dentist left behind over ten years ago. And people wonder why I hated dentists for so damn long O_o
And of course these didn’t show up initially in the x-rays because of all the other crap in my mouth. This was all discovered last week when I went in for the monthly check-up and progress report. He was happy until he was poking along my upper back gums. He wasn’t sure if it was my jawbone or something else in there… so we had to x-ray only to discover some nice chunks of my wisdom teeth still buried in there.
Yesterday left work early for 2pm appointment. Dentist is figuring a quick in and out procedure. Nope… four shots later I am finally able to not feel much. The fuckin’ lidocaine is now coursing through my body… heart is pounding through my chest… hands are shaking… and then the endorphins kick in because of the continual injections. Great… what I don’t need…
Left one comes out no problem… right one is a pain in the ass as the first shot of the local anesthetic didn’t do crap and I was feeling everything. Second shot… a bit better but still feeling things. Third shot… finally… not feeling the pain. Something about the right side of my mouth that doesn’t like to be numbed. Right piece comes out finally. And we are done… next appointment in two months…

Come home… heart is still pounding through my chest… arms are shaky… and legs are now shaky. Great… driving home in this condition? Sure to get pulled for and would have to explain this one. O_o
Made it home in one piece. And about thirty to forty minutes later I started to feel EVERYTHING again. And boy did I feel it. Was a pain I had not felt in many months… and as I tried to weather the storm I opted instead to reach for the bottle of pills at my side. Mr. Ibuprofen and Sir Vicodin… what a wonderful cocktail they make. Add into the mix a bit later some Guinness and I was comfy…
Again, closer to bedtime the pain was coming on… so popped just the ibuprofen with a Guinness chaser…

This morning, a bit of pain… another ibuprofen popped with a few in my bag for today if needed. No vicodin for now… am trying to see if I can hold off on that one unless really needed.

For those coming to the big shin-dig… I am going to need final answers for those who are “maybe” or “unresponsive” by the end of next week. That is when I am sitting down to order up everything.
For those curious… I know no one is… about another dozen or so people have been added though it’s not reflected on the counts anywhere. So yeah… that’s fucking up numbers and how much this is going to cost me in the long run.

AMV dvd has been burned and is set to go. Will actually have two versions of the disc. One will be the raw video files (AVI and MPG) and the other will actually be in a DVD format in the event that whatever computer we use decides it doesn’t like the DVD format (ie: Cache’s laptop for some odd reason). Speaking of computers, I might just even breakdown and bring the tower downstairs but I need to work out some kinks in the audio system. It likes to get spotty after a while with the speakers but has no issues whenever I’m listening in on headphones. So I need to verify the plugs are done correctly and the settings are proper. Giant pain in the arse…

Only one person volunteered for the making of certain dishes that I am requesting? Nice… thanks folks. Glad to be of service here… I’m here all bloody fuckin’ week…

And no one really getting hold of Milady about roasting… and if it’s only going to be one person up there then what the fuck is the bloody point, eh? It’s not a roast at that point… it’s a fuckin’ stand-up comedy act that isn’t funny. I have given people email addresses… or are the people just coming for the food because if it’s just for the food then hell, I could throw this even any ol’ fuckin’ time and not theme it up to anything else.

Speaking of the OMGWTFBBQ… this is the third one, yes? Well I have been thinking and I have come to the conclusion that we can only go so far in pushing the envelope legally when it comes to foods and meats and whatnot as well as not break me financially every year. One more year of pushing the limits… and then the fifth year will be a “back to basics” kind of thing and that will be it. Fini… five years is enough time to have experimented and played. So we are at the halfway point of these events… at least the one’s that are hosted by me and Milady. Beyond that… who knows. Maybe I’ll get a wild hair up my arse and will go in a completely different route where we do small gatherings of people and serve out several courses in a sit-down manner… or put every dish I make on fire in some fashion just for show… it all depends on how where I want to be at at that time. And at this time I know that five years will be enough of this theme for me at least unless I am able to import in some seriously kickass stuff and I don’t have a bunch of pussies showing up not trying anything.

I was going to write some more crap today… but right now I’m in pain… I’m tired… I should not be at work but have to be because I have a client coming in today… and just want to curl up and sleep…

Ducks… Concert for Diana… and OMGWTFBBQ…

first off… the big news for the day for Anaheim Ducks fans, with today being the beginning of the UFA signing frenzy Ducks GM Brian Burke blew everyone’s minds by signing former Red Wing defenseman Mathieu Schneider to a two-year $11.25 million contract.
What does this mean? In the event that Scott Niedermayer does announce his retirement from the NHL in the coming weeks, he’s got a rather decent replacement to fill in for him. If Scott decides to stay around for another year then it just means that the defensive blueline is going to be insane next season.

There were rumors going around at one point earlier this week that UFA Paul Kariya might see if he can come back to Anaheim… but I seriously doubt this would happen. Anaheim fans are not a group to easily forget the bullshit he has pulled in the years past when he was a Mighty Duck… and the fact that he’s going to want more than he’s worth after the disappointing performances in Colorado and Nashville… sorry Paul, but our arena does not welcome you into the flock…

Will be curious to see what happens with the whole Chris Drury thing that is taking place right now. He was one of the big names that there were a lot of teams interested in… but was the money going to be right to sign him? Now it seems he’s wanting to head to a West Coast team… there are three of them. And apparently only two of them are in serious negotiations. Anaheim is not one of those teams, though it would not surprise me if Burke tossed something in to fuck with San Jose and Los Angeles… ^_~

Ilya Bryzgalov will most likely be traded away in the coming months… still need to get word from Teemu Selanne if he’s going to return for another year or if considers this “going out on top”…
So now it’s a game of hurry up and wait…

For those not watching today the Concert for Diana, you missed (or are missing) a really good concert. Lots of artists… and a damn good event. Acts that I didn’t think would be any good have been rather entertaining. VH1 had issues during Fergie’s performance… but no loss there. Lily Allen and Joss Stone both were really good…
Not sure if the concert will be re-broadcast again after today… but if you get the chance, watch it.

And next week is the Live Earth concert on Bravo… and MSNBC and CNBC… a ton of performances taking place during that concert from hell. there are acts in all sorts of countries that I want to see… I definitely am hoping to see Juli perform in Hamburg. Trying to figure out how in the hell Snoop Dogg is getting into Germany… but whatever… if they let Tom Cruise in then they have to let a non-Christian Science pot-smokin’ Ducks fan in…

Okay… who in the hell let Andrea Bocelli out onto a stage? Fuckers!!!!

Back to Live Earth… set the DVR’s for fuckin’ early. And leave them be for the next 24 hours. That is all…

So we seem to pinning down the menu a lot more for the OMGWTFBBQ… one protein got dumped… which was a nice $200 savings for my pocketbook but I increased two other proteins a bit in order to play a bit more. In an upcoming email to invitees, I will be requesting certain some volunteers for a couple of specific dishes. Nothing overly difficult… just a bit of a request. And I’ll also be making a request of those who have not mentioned a specific dish within in their RSVP to donate to one of the two donation links that I have posted up in the invite lest this thing kill me financially with BlizzCon the following weekend and rent due a few days following the event.

AMV’s are being sorted through… and have almost been finalized. Just going through a few more to get some opinions… and then will work with some folks to figure out an order… and then the burning process will take place for final testing on a DVD player…
Figuring to get the little show started between 8:30pm – 9pm… depends on the amount of darkness we have in a few weeks and when. Gonna be digging up the sunset times for that day and figuring things out based upon current times that things are dark enough. Sunset due for about 7:55pm… give it another thirty minutes or so to darken up a bit more… plenty of time I think since I’ve only heard from a couple people on the roasting part of this event. If nothing else, I bore people to death with AMV’s :P

Hello, good evening and welcome to nothing much…

A no-holds barred half-nelson and the loving touch. The comfort and the joy of feeling lost with the only living boy in New Cross…

don’t ask… was trying to find something else and this one just kind of struck me and I went with it… could have been worse, could have done “My Second To Last Will And Testament” ^_~

a few things of note here…
1) played on the grill yesterday and things are definitely looking up. Sadly we discovered through the process of actually eating that these things were huge and would fill people up after only one serving, thus negating all of the other food that would be present. Not a good thing, right? So we had to work on another plan of attack in order to offer up the same thing just in a smaller form. We got to where we wanted to go with this… and whomever is present at my place the evening before the gathering is going to be assisting in the assembly of these little buggers.
Think we could give White Castle a run for their money with these things… ^_~

2) a reminder via Milady: for those who have stories… want to roast me… or have pictures please submit them to her at OMGWTFBBQ07 }at{ gmail }dot{ com…
If nothing is forth coming then it’s going to be a VERY short evening of food… and kicking everyone out and watching the AMV’s myself…

3) got some new toys this week… two of which while at Macy’s had me singing “Shopper’s Paradise” in my head… not a good thing to be hearing this song in your head while actually shopping in a department store ^_~
But enough about that song… the toys we got this week…
one KitchenAid Immersion Blender (gotta have the stick blender!!!)
one KitchenAid 12cup Food Processor (note to self, Black & Decker should stick to something else than kitchen appliances)
one KitchenAid 6qt Stand Mixer (bwahahahahaha!!!! I have my machine!!!)

Did you catch the theme there? Shall I rewind it for you and play it again? Didn’t think so…
So yeah, this is a KitchenAid household for sure… lots of other KitchenAid in the place that hasn’t been bought this week… there’s the hand mixer I bought a few years ago after the previous one blew up on me in the middle of making the buckeye balls (remember that yummy goodness? BTW: it was a B&D hand mixer… go figure)… got a couple of kitchen utensils that are also KitchenAid. Only appliance (aside from fridge, oven and microwave) that isn’t KitchenAid is the blender and that one has yet to fail me (not B&D obviously)…

4) maybe a bit later I will discuss the OMGWTFBBQ a bit more and what it means. What it does not mean is safety in foods that are known. We are even taking traditional barbeque items and changing them up a bit to give them something unexpected. If you think we are going for comfort foods then you are going to starve at this event… plain and simple. Nothing will be hitting that grill that is a traditional entree… and this is why the title OMGWTFBBQ…
OMG = damn this is actually good…
WTF = seriously? We’re eating that?
Do you people think I am not going to stick to the title? To not even try one of the dishes prepared is an insult to those who took the time to prep these items… an insult to the chefs and cooks who toiled away in hot kitchens. Do you go into a 4-star restaurant that has some of the most exquisite entrees on their menu and because you’ve never tried it before are not going to eat now? Same thing here… you do not insult a chef on his turf by not eating what he has prepared… period. There are going to be several us spending the days prior to this event working on everything from pastas to soups to sauces… don’t insult our time and dedication spent working on this menu.

that is all for now… soccer match at noon… and WoW fishing tournament at 2pm…

shhh… we’re hunting WTF foods…

actually not hunting… we have a good idea of what we are going to be preparing. Just trying to figure out how we are going to prepare some of these things. Woohoo!!! Two guys working with several proteins we know absolutely nothing about… this is what makes it so much fun.

Speaking of people working with unknown proteins… nearly fell out of my chair when I saw the ingredients that they had for the first challenge of this years “Top Chef”… most of the stuff they were dealing with was stuff I’ve dealt with before. And people fucked them up… big time.
How in the hell can you over-do boar ribs? They are just like regular ribs you asshole… just a wee bit leaner. Fuckin’ moron… glad he got booted for that fuck up.
And the guy who was last to pick his proteins… yeah, that was a clusterfuck in itself. Alligator tail and monkfish liver… I know that the tail is a pain in the ass to prepare as I’ve tried to prepare croc tail and fucked it up. But the guy actually thought it was good when he was tasting it. Good? You overcooked it… it was tougher to chew than nibbling on some 95 year old’s crusty nipples…

there you go folks… the one gross-out for the day… thank you very much… I’m here all week…

So Clinton and I spent yesterday afternoon/evening going over everything for the OMGWTFBBQ for this year. Actually sitting down and planning courses… I have mainly only focused on the proteins in the past allowing others to deal with the other stuff. Not this year… while we are taking a risk with what others might be bringing, we are also trying to come up with different things that will work well with all the other stuff. And apparently I’m going to be learning some new cooking techniques… and will be making my first hollandaise next weekend (seriously? The recipe is simple… it’s all of the prep and actually making that is the pain and temperamental).
And yesterday was the beginning of playing with recipes. Making sure we have the basic concept down… and making sure that the damn thing holds together after being cooked. Sadly my place ended up being a giant wall of smoke and grease, but I know that this will not be an issue come next month when these are prepared on a grill outdoors. But the end result was a success after a few failures… should prove to be interesting since we will be most likely prepping them the day before or even the day of.
Some stuff we will be able to do up in the days leading up to the event. Other stuff will have to be prepped that day because it won’t hold overnight *cry*

I am looking for some volunteers though… a couple of people that would be able to assist Clinton and I when needed whether it be upstairs in the kitchen or outside by the grill(s). If interested please let me know so that we can figure some stuff out. But let it be known that while you might volunteer we might not need your assistance as we are also working to try and secure a couple of Clinton’s classmates to assist as well… so if they might be able to help out then our work might be a bit easier than expected.
In the days leading up to the event will be the part that we will be requiring assistance if at all possible with any of the prep work that can be done ahead of time. Small kitchen = not much room to work with but we are going to be utilizing every inch of the front room as possible. Using a coffee table as a prep station… bringing in a couple of other tables as prep stations… coolers for storage… etc. Yeah… this thing is going to be insane!!! But should definitely top the previous couple of events that we’ve done. Of course once this event is over with, the planning will almost immediately begin for next year ^_~

For those who are planning on attending, I will state this now…
For the most part the entire menu is Kosher…
While the invite says the gathering starts around 3pm, food won’t be hitting the grill until probably about 5 or 5:30…
If you are bringing stuff that has a final part of preparation that needs to be done at my place, please let us know now so that we can figure spacing. Let us know how much space you will be needing…
If you are brining stuff that needs to be kept cold for a period of time, again, please let us know and about how much room will be required in the fridge or freezer… we are going to be running tight on space I think and I’d rather know now than the day of…
There is one allergy to bananas… and one person who has a dislike for mayonnaise… if something you are bringing contains one of those two items, please make note of it on an index card or something…

The AMV’s won’t start until after sundown… I’m figuring about 8:30 or 9:00. Some have already been chosen… and somehow we are going to work these in between speakers (all how many of you? One or two? Such disappointments…)

And as always… if you have stuff for Milady, please let her know as well. Her email is the name listed to the left at this domain (not the sub-domain)…

OMGWTFBBQ and Roasting of Niekon on 28 July 2007

Okay people, I have a list of names for potential roaster. If your name is on the list and you do not wish to roast, let me know. If your name is not on the list and you want to roast let me know. Lastly, if you want to roast and think you cannot make it to the event, we will need to figure out for some sort of substitute for you by either DVD or CD to be played at the event. Unless we can figure on some sort of connection, those would be the best options as we have no idea on a true time line. Hell, do these things really have an actual time line?

Anyway, the list:
Cameron
Chris D. (his high school buddy)
Tricia
dankie13
queeniexb
Katylin
Matt (Disney friend)
Lady Clayton
Seanyoda
Cachecrash

I am also looking for a possible host because I don’t think I am completely qualified for the job but will do it if no one else wants to.

Also, I am looking for photos, stories, and quotes of Niekon. If you have any of these that you would like to submit, you can do that via email or snail mail. Note that if you go with the snail mail route, you will not be getting the photos back. If you want to email, send the photos

no love for OMGWTFBBQ ’07?

So waiting to hear from folks… ideas… comments… suggestions…

In other news, the past few nights have been sheer torture for me. Actually the days have been too. Migraine from hell had managed to keep me awake most nights and getting only a couple of hours of sleep (if that much) a night… not exactly a good feeling when one is leaving home at 6am to go to work. Did end up going into work yesterday and just working by the dim light of my monitor (hurray for brightness control!!!)… office lights off… music off… volume on phone turned way down… I was in agony. But had work to do… conference calls I had to partake in… et cetera.
Last night was the first night I actually slept… and I slept almost the whole night without any problems. Skull-splitting pain isn’t completely gone… but have enough hot buttered rums with an extra splash of rum and your head won’t hurt either… at least not until the next morning anyway ^_~
So yeah… that’s been a fun one… not something I want to repeat any time soon. And while in that immense pain I never ate anything… and now I’ve had breakfast (a chorizo and egg burrito) and lunch (three tiny soft tacos)… knowing my luck someone is going to try to force dinner on me tonight too… bastards… :P

And a correction to Sunday: the Anaheim Ducks are not playing on Sunday… they are playing Nashville tomorrow. For some odd reason I was reading the schedule online wrong. BUT!!!! If you are visiting… there is a chance you are going to arrive around the end of the Penguins game… but hopefully it will be over by 2pm. Because I know no one cares about the Islanders or the Capitols… though the Caps are doing fairly well this season. It’s the Penguins that have my interest right now… in the Eastern Conference…

That is all for now… weekend plans are pretty simple. Saturday will be spent playing WoW… going to pre-order the seventh Harry Potter book… maybe a little shopping for some munchies… and then games galore on Sunday. Okay… fuck the game… the commercials and the half-time show… ^_~

okay folks… this is the decider for this summer’s event…

Folks… this is the question that has come up at least once already this year… and was asked a couple of times last year…

Is there going to be another OMGWTFBBQ in 2007? Initially the idea was going to be nixed for 2007 due to the fact that I’m turning 35… and we were going throw a roast in my honor. It’s an honor to have made to 35 being me… trust me on this one folks.
But as things were being learned about what would have to take place for us to secure a location for several hours (I figured four to six hours at least)… food for everyone (I think the list of guests was around 125 to 150 people)… and having a keg of Guinness on stage that was easily accessible to the roasters and the roastee (that would be me)… and of course, easy access for exiting for a quick smoke since smoking indoors in California seems to be a big no-no anymore. Fuckin’ tree-huggin’ hippies trying to tell me I can’t smoke anywhere I want to when I have to hear their whining about how cruel it is to shove cornmeal down a gooses throat and that we should ban fois gras… bastards…

Anyway… this got me thinking. I would seriously love to still have a huge event… but this kind of thing is not going to be financially viable for Milady and I to pull off in the next six months while we are also trying to save up for a trip up to SF the following month… and save up for a new laptop for me (so Milady can play WoW on her computer and I play WoW on my laptop)… et cetera. Priorities folks… and as much as I would love to hold this huge event in some grand ballroom somewhere… it’s not going to happen. Not without winning a large sum of money very quickly…
So… this is where everyone else is going to come into play with this… and it comes in several parts…
a) the OMGWTFBBQ – YES!!! Let’s do this again and really blow the fuckin’ doors off of the bus with this one. I mean it’s almost February, right? Let’s get things sorted out… meats that will be prepared… recipes if needed… and pooling our ideas with how to do this just right.

b) the Roasting of Niekon – this one is possible… at our current location, just not grand as if it were on a stage. Pictures? I hear a computer hooked up to a projector works wonders. Roasters? I think we have enough people who would attend this event if I were being roasted or not… can’t be too hard to come up with a list of folks (who would need to contact Milady to organize this part of it). Roastee? If I can get a few people to help me out in the kitchen and on the grill(s)… then I am sure we can make sure I’m not running around like a nut all day long.

But this is where we come into a weird situation… how many people can we handle at the current location? Obviously not the 125 – 150 that I was originally tossing around within a ballroom… but we’re not talking our typical couple of dozen people either.
c) if we do everything else… do we also want to something similar to the closing of the gathering like last year’s event? I would have to come up with newer AMV’s… piece them together in a way that would flow nicely… and possibly toss in a couple of surprises here and there too…

So come on folks… give me your ideas… your suggestions… your comments. If you know someone who typically is part of the OMGWTFBBQ gatherings who probably won’t see this entry, please feel free to point them in this direction…
