it’s been how long?

Filed under: random crap — Niekon @ 7:03 am

Yes… I know. It’s been what? Three and a half months since my last posting? Obviously you can tell that my life has been overly exciting and that I have so much to gripe about.

Yeah…. about that. I’ve pretty much actively given up following the news media with the exception of The Daily Show (yes, I know that is not considered real news media) and certain sites during the World Cup. Only other bit of media I managed to dig up was during ComicCon when there were so many different stories circulating the story of someone stabbing someone else in the eye with a pen.

Anyway, let’s get into the past two and a half months and some other crap:
a) Milady and I became DVC members – in early July we went from broke to even more broke when we joined DVC after going over the math and figuring out things in our heads. The math made sense… and shockingly we would come out ahead every time we went to WDW. I’ll miss my concierge service… but I won’t miss the $3500 hotel bill after 2 weeks at WDW.

b) Milady broke Niekon… again – yes, Milady broke me. I made the stupid mistake of tickling her one afternoon and she kneed me in the ribs. What we didn’t realize at the time was that she ended up cracking one of my ribs. I’m still healing up… it’s not as bad as it used to be but yeah… still a little sore after over a month now. Moral of the story? Be sure to pin Milady’s legs down before tickling her.

c) 4th in a row – Niekon somehow managed to score tickets one more time to BlizzCon 2010… again. It was close, but we managed to do it. This means absolutely nothing to anyone else except those who play Blizzard games. Sorry to my non-gamer friends, but it’s who I am ^_~

d) stealth… sap… pickpocket… stab… stab… stab – we closed down Milady’s WoW account until Cataclysm is released later this year, but we did move her rogue character to my account so that I could work on it. She sat rather dormant for a while and then recently became active again and is slowly working her way up to kick-ass mode. Still need another dagger in order to switch specs, but for now she’s doing her stabby-stab thing with swords. She even stepped foot into a raid instance that she had no business going into… Icecrown Citadel. *shock*

e) Sir, yes sir! – for some odd reason someone thought it was a wise idea to make Niekon an officer in his WoW guild. So that means he’s going to be a bit more active in WoW. But now there are also others in the guild who can track him down via Blizzard’s Real ID system if I’m playing WoW on another toon or am playing Starcraft II.

So that is most of the past few months… I am a boring person that somehow seems to think that others give a flying fuck about what I’m doing in my life. And upcoming stuff?

1) Gwarsh!!! – Milady & Niekon are taking their nephew Otto to Disneyland. This is technically his 2nd visit to the parks, but probably the 1st time that he’ll remember. His parents will also be in attendance. ^_~

2) You’ve been here how long? – Niekon will be the guest of Milady in a couple of weeks as they attend her 10-year anniversary banquet hosted by the main Mouse himself.

3) I’m (not) a star!!! – Niekon will be taking several days off in October to attend the inaugural Anaheim International Film Festival… it sounded interesting and thought it would be kind of cool to see what it was like. If it’s good then we might go again if they hold it again. If it sucks, then we know and never have to attend again. And yes, Milady will be attending some of the stuff too… ^_~

4) less QQ and more pew-pew – as mentioned above up there somewhere, we are attending BlizzCon again. Woohoo!!!! 2 days of nerd-rage and everything else. 2 days of Warcraft… 2 days of Starcraft… 2 days of Diablo… and 2 days of the new mystery IP!!!

and that is my life in a nutshell from the past few months and looking ahead a few months so that the next time I post again in six months or so, that I will have less that I will have to cover.

And now for the random trivia of the day:
On this day, 29 July… the following occurred:
1921 – Adolph Hitler became the leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party (a not so bright spot)
1948 – the Olympic games resume after a 12-year hiatus because of World War II, opening in London
1958 – NASA is created
1959 – Hawaii is voted in and made a state of the Union.
1972 – Wil Wheaton was born (it’s a nerd thing)
1981 – Prince Charles and Lady Diana get married, the whole world apparently was watching

and if you are Catholic, then you have several saints that this is their feast day with one of those saints actually commemorated by several different faction of Christianity (who knew that Lutherans had saints? I didn’t.).

and that is the news from Niekon’s world where all the men are awesome, and the ladies are lookers, and all the children are non-existent. (my apologies to Garrison Keillor)

and now for something completely different…

So I thought I’d try something a wee bit different on this posting since it has been about two and a half months since my last posting here…

To begin with, I’m sitting here on the couch typing this up on my new iPad. Yes, I got an iPad, as shocking as that may sound. I am already thinking of the different uses I can utilize it within everyday life… and eventually I might pass this iPad to Milady and upgrade myself up to the 3G version… but that is not in the immediate future. My first gripe is that it’s a bit slower than a traditional keyboard but it’s fast enough for someone who doesn’t type 60+ words per minute.

Next up… for those who might be in the dark about my life, I had back surgery at the beginning of March where the surgeon went in and cut out a bit of my disc at my L5 if I recall correctly. The surgeon took somewhere between 5-10% of the disc that was bulging out and pressing against the nerve sack. And since then I’ve been out of work recovering from the surgery. I am expecting to go back to work on the 19th of this month as long as I manage to not damage myself in the next week.
Over these past many weeks I’ve done a lot nothing since I was instructed that I was to take it as easy as possible for the first four weeks. I did pretty much exactly that. Sure I went out to brunch once a week but I did try to limit the amount of time I spent sitting in an uproot position. And of course there the weight limitation of five pounds that I could lift for that first month which drove me insane. It has now been increased to ten pounds and I am allowed to be more active like going to the gym as long as I am not doing anything that will put a strain on my back. And while I am doing well for the most part, there are days that I have a lot of pain or spasms that drive me to a bottle of pills that I am trying to avoid taking due to the narcotic nature of them… gotta love the Percoset!!!

So enough about my back… let’s move on to hockey for a short bit. The Anaheim Ducks were officially eliminated the other night when the Colorado Avalanche went into OT and Anaheim lost in the shoot-out. Tonight Anaheim lost in the shoot-out, this time also against a team that was also out of the playoffs this year. Anaheim got off to a really bad start his season and didn’t really get their hockey legs until nearly two months into the season… a bit too late to recover. I’m hoping that in the off-season Anaheim will be able to pull together a group of players that all mesh well together and are able to get off to a great start and maintain the awesome play that they have maintained in the pervious five seasons where they went into the playoffs. In the meantime, I will be sitting down and looking over the playoff match-ups to make my picks for the first round and in how many games. And then in June I will be paying attention to see if Teemu Selanne picks up his second Masterson Trophy in his illustrious career. The other big questions are if Teemu and Scott Niedermayer will return for another season with Anaheim or if Huey will retire. If they both choose retirement then you can guarantee that both of their numbers will be retired in the early part of the next season.

And now for the boring part that my non-gamer friends/readers will want to skip the rest of this post.
While I have had a lot of time off from work over the past five weeks it is amazing how little I am actually playing video games, especially World of Warcraft. In my first week I was in-game pretty much every day, but after that it just got to be tedious and I log into the game a few times a week just long enough to do what I have to deal with. I’ve actually spent most of my time off watching Stargate SG-1 since I borrowed all ten seasons. Currently I am just about done with season six so I am expecting/hoping to be done with all ten before I return to work or damn near close to being done.
But that is not to say I have not been paying attention to the news about the upcoming expansion for World of Warcraft. Blizzard has started releasing information on the class changes that are coming in the expansion. I have yet to see the pending changes for my main class, so I’m not quite sure what to think yet.
And then of course there are other games that i’ve been playing when not playing WoW. I picked up Dragon Age for the PC and also Left 4 Dead on the PC as well. What has been nice was that I had tied my laptop into the tele so i’ve been gaming on a 46″ tele. I’m going to miss being on the couch… I really like being able to game on the tele. -_-, But I know that Milady would like to get the tele to watch whatever she has recorded on the DVR.

And that about covers things on my end. No idea when I’ll be posting again. I think it might all depend upon what is on my mind and where I happen to be. Depending on timing and whatnot, I might post during the upcoming Anaheim Comic-Con. We shall see…

2009… an interesting year indeed

Filed under: random crap — Niekon @ 2:53 pm

Oh 2009… how I won’t miss you. True, we had some good times together but when it comes down to it I ended up spending most of our time together on my back and there was no fucking involved.

Yes ladies and gentlemen… 2009 was the year Niekon discovered that he was no longer the young spry lad he once thought he was. Somewhere in May or June Niekon managed to injure himself in such a way that it never got better. Instead it decided to get worse and worse to the point that I could no longer stand the pain and gave in… I went to see a doctor (something I had not done since 2004 I think… happy 5 yr anniversary Kaiser!!!). The typical crap… take these and let’s see how it goes… didn’t work? Okay let’s try this now… how about this?… Oh damn, there’s actually a bulge back there. Time to inject your spine with steroids!!!
Will someone please explain to these people that if I’m on my back and you pump my spine with steroids that I’m not getting any exercise thus I will not be bulking up in the correct manner? Please?
Yes… this was the year that Niekon got a bit bigger than he was comfortable with because of these drugs they were shoving into me. And only now am I able to get my sorry ass into a gym again since the injury. And I was doing so well too… I was actually getting to the point of needing a belt again.

But there was other fun and exciting part of 2009…
January – June: the most uneventful time of them all… I think. I don’t seem to recall a lot of anything happening during that time. At least nothing overly noteworthy.

In July, a few of us took off to the Queen Mary for several days to partake in Convergence. We had a lot of fun… mostly. Yes, Niekon ended up with 2nd degree burns on four of his fingers on his left hand on the final night and was a pain in the ass about it and took forever to drag to the ER to deal with. But on the other hand, Niekon zonked out on pain pills can be quite hilarious. “But I have a reservation!!!! And it’s in my name!!!” I will never live that night down.

A month later we all took off from work for a weekend at BlizzCon 2009. A lot of craziness and insanity… even with me in constant pain and popping pain pills as soon as I was supposed to pop them. But I think everyone enjoyed themselves… lots of drinking and food to be had.

A few weeks later Milady and I were up at DLR of the 40th Anniversary of the Haunted Mansion… a lot of money spent but I got a nice walking cane which was put to immediate use as soon as it was in my hands. Event was overall so-so… the dinner was not that thrilling. I could have whipped up something a lot more exciting better tasting than whatever it was that they gave us.
Right after that event was Disney’s D23 Expo just down the street at the Anaheim Convention Center. Again, the cane came in VERY handy even though I was once again popping pain pills like they were going out of style. 4 days of what seemed to be exciting events that turned out to be only a few exciting events if you could get into them. My highlight of the event was seeing the Tron Legacy trailer in 3D and then watching the original Tron movie digitally restored.

October started out with a bang… actually, more like a shot. A shot to my spine to be exact. Somehow I managed to schedule my 1st epidural shot on the same day that I was to be attending the Star Wars In Concert event at The Pond (I mean Honda Center). Let’s just say that me drugged out on a local and having that wear off halfway though the concert? Made for an exciting rest of the evening.
The latter part of October was spent at Oktoberfest… lots of beer and food… not enough wenches. ^_~

November we were supposed to be heading out to the Dallas/Ft. Worth area for a few days to visit a friend but my doctor’s nixed that idea stating that me and planes are not good friends right now. So instead I spent my week long vacation getting another shot again and taking a couple of trips into the Disney parks to check out the new Princess & The Frog stuff.
November closed out with Thanksgiving dinner for Milady, CacheCrash, and me. That dinner proved to be a chase… Cache and I spent half of that Thursday morning hunting for our meal only to find what we were looking for in the back of an Asian market… 3 large Maine lobsters. So they sat in my fridge for several hours before taking the trip into a large pot of boiling water. They were not thrilled with that choice but it was either them or me. They almost did win a couple of battles but in the end the war was won and we dined.

December rolled in and Milady and I hosted our somewhat annual holiday gathering that ended in the playing of Rock Band… YouTube videos… and somehow someone telling me that I need to record my own cooking show to post online.
Christmas weekend was mostly spent with Milady working long and ofter VERY early hours and me sitting at home playing video games or watching movies. Hmmm… sounds like how most of my New Year’s weekend is going to be spent too.

Though, to close out 2009 and bring in 2010 I will be completely shaving off the beast that currently resides on my face and cutting off the floppy mop on the top of my head… photos will be taken of the before and after at least. No idea if we are going to document it any further than that. Might have to get a shot of the ponytail getting lopped off though. Oh Niekon… how will you survive? Your strength will be taken from you forever!!! I will have to figure something out I guess…

since it’s that time of year again…

Filed under: random crap — Niekon @ 3:35 pm

Alrighty folks… I was trying to figure out if I wanted to do this or not but after some consideration I said fuck it… let’s do it… ^_^

For those who are giving gifts this year… I have a favor, please actually make a donation to Child’s Play or get something off of one of the hospital wish lists. Much appreciated… I need more stuff in my place like I need another bulged disc.

For those visiting this holiday season… no, there is no tree. It was decided that we would hold off this year given that we are having a small holiday gathering and space is limited as is. So don’t be surprised when the traditional big green thing isn’t there in all of it’s ornamented and lit glory.

that is it… back into my little cubby hole.

contemplating…

Filed under: random crap — Niekon @ 6:36 am

thinking of doing a holiday party this year… nothing too big and involved… but at least a little something. Still trying to figure out the logistics of everything and whatnot if we do have one. Though I think this may be the first year we don’t have a tree up…

Also… congrats to Milady for her first raid run last night. She survived the Safety Dance on her first attempt… and somehow survived Gluth. ^_^

a lot of catching up to do…

Filed under: random crap — Niekon @ 9:19 am

1) I know that I owe folks Part II of the Convergence weekend… it will be worked on. Just trying to play catch-up with work and not get too far behind on other stuff.

2) Will post updates on pretty much the past month of two… what was the last thing that I mentioned about my back issue?

3) will post up links to photos and a rundown on the 40th Anniversary Haunted Mansion event along with my thoughts and opinions. Maybe you can all convince Milady to chime in too ^_~

4) will post up links to photos and a rundown on the first D23 Expo that was held this past weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center. Some good… some bad… definitely can see room for improvement in several areas.

5) I don’t think we had many… but there are photos from BlizzCon 2009 and thoughts and opinions on this year’s event compared to the previous years.

But just letting folks know that I am alive… and I have not forgotten about this place.
For now though… just filtering through all of this paperwork and figuring out what I’m going to be doing this coming weekend as Milady will be up north with family for the weekend.
