is it cruel or just yummy?

Filed under: cooking — Niekon @ 10:56 am

So over the past couple of weeks I’ve been reading through “The Foie Gras Wars” by Mark Caro… Milady thought it would be a good read for me since I’m such a fan of the stuff.

But in reading through (I’m a bit over halfway through now) I am seeing the ways that people go to promote their personal agenda which mostly was anti-foie gras. But now I’m curious to know what people’s thoughts are on the stuff…

a) have you eaten foie gras before?
b) would you eat foie gras if it was presented to you in a dish?
c) if not, why?
d) are you aware of what goes into the making of foie gras?

And since I’m pretty much opening this one up… if responses are attacking anyone or me, I will delete such comments. I know that this is a hotbed issue with certain folks but I am curious. Plain and simple. I don’t need more propaganda tossed my way… I’ll just delete such comments while sipping a glass of Riesling and munching on some pan-seared foie gras…

mark down your calendars in July…

there will be no OMGWTFBBQ… after several years of running this thing I think I have run out of ideas of what to do and definitely don’t have the time nor patience to do this for another year.

In the event that I change my mind it will be a much smaller scale than in previous years in which I would contact each person individually with a date and time.

in other news… I am two months nicotine free… and something like ten weeks caffeine free…

that is all…

I declare this week officially a wash…

*there is an edit to this post with additional reading*

In the immortal words of Chef Ramsey… “shut it the fuck down now!!!”

1) keg tapped out on Sunday evening so I called the keg place Monday morning to see about a delivery that afternoon. They called back six hours later near time for them to close up for the day. Nice customer service there. So new keg is now to be delivered on Saturday… that’s five days of no alcohol since I refuse to fill up my fridge with cans and/or bottles. Should be fun and exciting to be around me…

2) seems I’m not getting my new fridge this weekend now. Apparently the guy fucked up when he entered it into the system and marked the color as “white” not “stainless steel”. And guess which color they were out of? Now the current expectation is maybe on the 28th for delivery. Needless to say I’m less than thrilled with the current experience.
“The Aliso Viejo store has it in stock”… great, get it from them and deliver it to me at the time I designated. You now have my money… and I am to be inconvenienced because someone entered the wrong part number? I set aside time from my weekend to accept the delivery. Now I have to adjust for another weekend? Fuck you…

3) when you are at work and you set up work orders/production orders in a certain manner you expect them to be followed, right? Well, what happens when someone who’s last name is similar to that of the owner goes and makes changes? You no longer have the authority of that project. And what happens when someone else with the same last name starts questioning you about why certain things are being done that are not on the work order? Then you’re caught in quite a spot. Welcome to every bloody day here at work. Seriously, I cannot avoid getting annoyed and aggravated because someone who is supposed to be a “salesperson” is stepping in and taking over my accounts. How am I supposed to do my job when someone is stepping over me and not discussing with me first so that I can issue the changes? And when something does end up go wrong who is to blame? Me of course because I’m the Project Manager… never mind that changes were made without my knowledge.
If it weren’t such a crappy time to be trying to find a job I’d be gone… seriously. I’m getting sick of this crap.

4) while at Disneyland this past weekend we stopped by Disneyana to see what was interesting and whatnot. And while we were there we were looking at the D23 charter membership certificate frames. But you have to have your D23 membership card in order to buy it… slight problem… this just launched this past week. They have not had time to send out the membership cards. So how are you supposed to show that you are a member? Apparently they expect you to have a printout of the transaction if you did it online.
Disney… one of the premier tourist destination does not have the technology to input a name into a database to pull up whether or not you are a D23 member or not. Complete clusterfuckery… this CM I was dealing with just expected me to be able to produce my payment receipt on the spot. I saw nothing on the site that stipulated I had to bring it in to show proof of membership.
Here’s an idea… it might be a bit slower but it’s forward thinking. At midnight the night before the event consider that the cutoff for new memberships that don’t need to show “proof of receipt”. Print out the list of members and match it against state issued ID’s. Yes… it’s going to be long but guess what? The alphabet works for a reason. Anyone who joins after midnight will have a message pop up stating that in order to show proof at the time of the event, they will need to provide a printed out copy of their payment receipt.
Customer service as it should be…

today is going to a lot of nothing hopefully… did the corned beef and cabbage thing on Sunday already. And no Guinness to enjoy it with… so no need to celebrate tonight.

back to the ol’ grindstone…

Back in the office after that lovely two week vacation… wish it could have been longer though. ^_~

Not a whole lot of stuff going on in life right now. Work is work… just slower than usual. I have some projects upcoming but for now I’m kind of sitting around just awaiting little things to be starting up.
Managed to pick up Wall-E yesterday evening on my way home… and I broke down… I bought Animal Crossing: City Folk for the Wii along with the Wii Speak. Still considering whether or not I want to get Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip… it uses the Balance Board which is cool… just unsure of how sensitive/responsive it might be. If it’s too insane, apparently you can just with the Wii Remote and nunchuk to play.

Still haven’t delved too far into Wrath of the Lich King… wanting others to get up a few levels before I take on Northrend myself. This will allow me to find my mobs easier than having to fight for them amongst several dozen folks at once. It’s part of what I liked about the beta… I wasn’t having to deal with so many other people in the same area all trying to get the same mobs/quest items.
I do have my Death Knight rolled though and started her on her quests… we’ll see how much loving I give her in the coming weeks.

And of course… it’s coming up… the holiday season. *sigh* Just back from a vacation and we’re trying to now figure out how to clear out a huge section of the front room in order to make room for a huge tree. The new couch seems to be a wee bit longer and not as easy to move things around. Think we’re going to be moving some furniture around this weekend too. *cry* Must get tree up prior to Thanksgiving.
Speaking of prior to Thanksgiving… last I heard was that Milady had most if not all of the holiday cards set and ready to go. No clue if she needed stamps or not… apparently she thinks we’re okay with what I had bought prior to the trip.
And no… I am not planning on anything special for Turkey Day this year. Milady is working… and I’ll probably spend my day doing what I do best… as little as possible. I might cook up that bear roast though. That’s kind of appropriate, isn’t it? Slather it in the wagyu bacon… and let the fatty goodness of the bacon seep into the meat… mmmm…

And that’s about it… life is back to it’s boring ol’ self once again. Still needing to go through all of the photos from the trip and categorize them properly and tag them with the appropriate comments. Make sure signs are matched up with their foods… et cetera. And of course write up about all of the food we didn’t write about… particularly the various paid events from the Food & Wine Fesitval as well as our rather awesome meal at Victoria & Albert’s (where I saw neither Victoria nor Albert… so disappointing).

god I love the Chairman…

Filed under: cooking — Niekon @ 12:21 pm

Iron Chef America last weekend was Battle Beer… and not just any beer…

Beers provided for this challenge are:
Bière de Miel Honey Beer from Belgium
Ivanhoe Pale Ale from the United Kingdom
Shiner Hefeweizen from Texas
Original Schlenkerla Smokebeer from Germany
Black Chocolate Stout from Brooklyn

Oh Kimmie… I see a Shiner there.

These were selected as some of the best of the best and I was loving that one of the judges actually deals with beers regularly. The other two judges were meh… and they lost points with me for not liking the German smokebeer. They don’t know a good thing… it’s smoked ham in a beer!!!

So for those who might have missed this episode, I think it was set to air again on Food Network tomorrow… and I know if you do a search for Flay vs. Angerer, you will come up with several torrent sites.

we’re ready to go for jump…

Reservations have been made… four people jumping tandem on 7 November at 10am.

Rental car only thing left at this point in time. I think all of the reservations have been made for everything… dining… transportation to and from the airport… tours…

in other unexciting news…
getting ready for the production run from hell that is going to have all eyes on me for the next few weeks… all for something like around 1.5 million pouches of dip mix. So many procedures and protocols that need to be followed. I’ve got a folder of information that I need to read over this weekend to make sure that everyone is on the same page and that there are no errors when we fire up at some point on Monday morning.

I’m currently burning through the first season of Mad Men… I am enjoying the series thus far… and Milady was kind enough to set up the DVR to record the marathon of Season Two.

Trying to track down the Pushing Daisies first season dvd that was available at Target. Though I do have the entire first season on a hard drive.

and we’ve got some other dvd’s and stuff on the DVR to try and hammer through. Hopefully the heat will not be too mean to us this evening that we can try to get through as much as possible.

and that is all from no man’s land here in #5…
at some point in time I’ll sit down and seriously hammer out some of the recent dining reviews that I have been meaning to get done for folks.

Thou shalt keep your website’s information up to date…

Filed under: food reviews — Niekon @ 12:46 pm

or you’ll get a cranky email from me when I show up at your “dining & shopping center” expecting certain locations to be open since your site says they are…

My email sent out this morning:
Good day,
My wife, some friends and I went to Anaheim’s GardenWalk yesterday (21 September)after seeing that some new restaurants had “opened” the previous week. We had our sights set on trying out Bar Louie’s which according to your website stated the location was open. Upon getting to this dining location we were told that they were “soft opening” the bar only at 8pm with no dining at all, while the website states the location was to completely open this past Friday with hours of operation beginning at 11am. Frustrated, we decided to to the upper level to go so San Sai’s instead. Imagine our surprise to see this location too was closed with no signs of life within the location even though you’re site boasted of it opening this past week.
This has become a common occurance… I’ve been curious about Pop the Cork only to see that this location has been closed every time I have gone to GardenWalk.

GardenWalk looks incomplete… feels incomplete… and ultimately is giving out wrong information for those who are visiting your website only to find out upon visiting GardenWalk that certain locations are not open that are reported to be open. Ultimately, my party ended up leaving your location extremely disappointed and hungry. Instead we went to Downdown Disney knowing that there would not be restaurants closed when they should be open. If your goal is to bring in the tourists, it might help to please the locals too as our word of mouth is your cheapest advertising.

Regards,
Niekon

seems they were kind of, uhmm… caught off guard by my email this morning. Not surprising… but it did at least get a response:

Niekon –
I’m so sorry that inaccurate information was communicated to you via our website. We do our best to maintain its accuracy but sometimes due to obstacles out of my control (permits, code issues etc) the dates change and we are not notified in a timely fashion by our tenants. With that said, I appreciate your feedback as this helps me stay on my toes and do a better job communicating with our customers.

Bar Louie will begin full food service on Wednesday. They are having “invite only” practice service today and tomorrow from 11-2 and 5-8 pm. This includes complimentary food. If you would like me to make a reservation for you, please let me know the number in your party and preferred time so you can try out Bar Louie’s food on us. In addition, I would love to provide you with a VIP parking pass for your next visit to Anaheim GardenWalk that will provide you with complimentary parking for the length of your stay.

GardenWalk has been open just over twelve weeks and with each month new stores and aesthetics will be added to complete our look. There will be 50 stores and restaurants open by the end of the year.

Again, my apologies for your disappointment and I hope you will give Anaheim GardenWalk another try in the future and watch us grow.

Please let me know if you would like the reservation at Bar Louie and provide your address if you would like me to mail a VIP parking pass.

Warmest Regards –
K.W.

so not a total loss right? We have a party of five heading over there this evening for this practice service. I’m more interested in the food than anything else… trying to decide if I want to walk in carrying a camera or not ^_~
I will be walking in with a least a print-out of their menu (available on their website) and a notepad. I’ll be at least somewhat nice since we are being allowed into this private “event”.

Speaking of being nice… I know, I need to write up a piece on one my most recent dining experiences on my recent trip. Can I just say, OMG!!!!! Now that’s what BBQ is all about ^_~
Let me tell you… a 5-meat BBQ sampler… killer and a lot of meat.

There’s more too… but I’ll discuss at another time… ^_~

I can bear-ly contain myself…

So yesterday was a rather eventful day in the office where one person ended up being sacked for pretty much trying to play the “I want more money or else I’m not going to work” card and lost. Whole lot of drama tied to that disaster yesterday that I’m not really going to get into here.

BUT… for those who attended the OMGWTFBBQ, there was one item that was originally planned and never arrived for one reason or another.
Well, last night I got an email that pretty much had me over the moon when I realized what it was that was now again available. Black bear… ^_^
So later this week I’ll be receiving a nice little 3.5 to 4 pound roast of black bear and a couple pounds of black bear bacon. Most definitely won’t be prepared this weekend… too many things on the schedule to do that, but will have to happen soon. I still have half of a rack of ribs that I need to figure out how to finish off. :P

In one of my last entries I made mention of pre-made characters being made available in the WoW beta… well those pre-mades disappeared within hours and were never heard from again. *cry* So I wasn’t able to get around to more of the different areas this past weekend… not as though it was that easy to do so anyway with the servers going down more often than a hooker at a suck-a-thon…

So Saturday was spent running through a zone that was several levels too high for me and watching the server drop out from under me as I was surrounded by mobs that would kill me in a heartbeat. Somehow I managed to make it through the zone (many thanks to wonky buffs from hell that made me overly powerful to 2-shot a level 76 mob) with only one death at the hands of the Scourge (oops… you mean that 78 Elite isn’t here to give me pie?). No freakin’ flight paths that I could see… but definitely a little “Desolace faction” action going on between the tribal badgers and electrical mutant lizards….
I did end up getting out of that area finally leaving only two areas “undiscovered” so I couldn’t complete that part of the achievements. And went running back to an area that so that I could start kicking ass on my fishing again (I am a fishing god!!!).

So whenever Northrend would go down I’d hope over onto my Blood Elf Death Knight… and went and got here a new hairdo. It was so cute!!! She’s got poofy pigtails now… awwww…
Anyway, I decided to portal back to Ebon Hold (the DK’s main staging area) and there was something going on… the place looked like it was being ransacked by the Scourge. Hmmm… pick-up this little quest here… go kill these Scourge things over yonder… deliver a letter to the head person in certain capital cities. Now this is where the fun comes in… you get ported in front of those capital cities (Stormwind and Ogrimmar) and you can’t cast spells… can’t get on your mount… and have to walk through the city while the city guards and residents hurl insults at you and hurl rotten fruit. Deliver some letter to the leader of that city and all is right in the world once again.
It was definitely one of the more interesting parts I’ve seen Blizzard do in this game and I loved it. I had to hop onto my Dranei DK to run that part of the quest for her too. Absolutely amazing story-driven quests… it definitely brings the DK’s into the fold in a more interesting and better-told way than *poof* “you’re Alliance/Horde!!!”

So with the beta servers wreaking havoc with my nerves… Sunday came along and sitting on my desktop around 10am PT was a notice from the EA Download Manager… Spore was ready to decrypt and install. Woohoo!!!!
Installed and have created a civilization of flying moose/bat/cow/??? creatures. So yeah… Spore is the current flavor of the week until Blizzard can stabilize the damn beta servers.

that is all for now… I’m off to cover two desks this week and assist on a third. Call me crazy (You’re Crazy!!!!!) but I hate to see others have to suffer the long hours too…

not so fine dining…

Filed under: food reviews — Niekon @ 5:06 pm

So this past Sunday a small group of eight of us all went out for lunch and it was decided somewhere beforehand that we would eat over at McCormick & Schmicks Grille at Anaheim’s Garden Walk. How could one possibly go wrong from a restaurant that has eighty locations, right? Wrong… this is the story of one classic fuck-up after another for a restaurant that not been open for very long.

We arrive at 11:30am… they are just opening up for the day. The place is dead… just like the rest of Garden Walk… not bad for a Labor Day weekend, right? :P
We get seated soon after arrival and are handed freshly printed menus that we were told are printed up twice a day depending upon their deliveries that day. At the top of the menu is something that caught my eye… “fresh swordfish harpooned by Captain Lance and his crew near Catalina”… mmm, swordfish. Have not had that in a few years… might as well go for the yummy. But first we have to get drinks and appetizers out of the way.
Drinks are ordered including the “fresh squeezed tea.” What? Okay, it’s early… I’ll give our server a break. Drinks arrive… and shortly after that appetizers. Thus far the food is looking good including Milady’s mango and avocado with crab salad. The thing was stacked high and held it’s form perfectly. It should have… the damn thing was cold. Not frozen… but pretty damn chilled otherwise the entire thing would have fallen apart once the ring mold was removed (there is a photo I took of it that I need to get off of the camera at some point).
So with the first of the food out, it’s time to order entrees. Various foods are being ordered… and I’m on the last leg of the ordering process and I order what else, but the swordfish caught by Capt. Lance with a harpoon.
“We’re out of swordfish”
“Huh?” Didn’t he tell us when we sat down that the menus were printed twice a day to reflect their seafood deliveries? Yeah… I thought he did and yet they were already out of swordfish and I know the lone other table hadn’t ordered it yet since they had just recently sat down themselves.
Server tries to explain… at this point in time I’m annoyed. I wanted swordfish… O_o
Instead I order the mahi-mahi. Orders are placed and the server takes off… only to return a couple of minutes later to inform me that indeed they did have swordfish. I change my order to the swordfish.

Food comes out… my drink is running a bit low. In fact, it’s empty at this point in time. Server asks if I’d like another… “yes, please” and he goes to get me another drink. A few minutes later he returns empty-handed to inform me that it will be a bit longer as they are changing out the keg. *sigh* Okay, but at least I know the first pint is one of the better ones from the keg ^_~
A few minutes later… he again returns… again empty-handed and proceeds to inform me that they are not changing the keg but are completely out of Guinness. Today is Sunday… they just opened and are out of Guinness. Doubtful they will be Guinness on tap for the rest of the day nor probably the next day either.
Fine… order a Sam Adams. Not a favorite but it will do for now. A few more minutes pass… server once again returns empty-handed. Care to guess what he said next? It’s easy… he said it to me just a few minutes prior.
“We’re out of Sam Adams…”
*whimper*
It’s taking a lot from me not to demand the Manager on Duty at this point in time to figure out what kind of ramshackle of a restaurant they were trying to run. Here it is Sunday… on a holiday weekend. Sunday morning/early afternoon at that. And they were out of not one but at least two different beers on tap. How in the hell were they going to make it until Tuesday when most places would be open again after the holiday weekend? Serve “freshly squeezed tea”?
I am beyond frustrated… and send him away. I am without drink… and I have over half of my delicious swordfish to finish still. He returns shortly after carrying a half pint of Guinness. Apparently it was all that was left of the last keg… and it was “on the house”. Sadly this had been sitting out for a while now and had completely settled and was was even losing it’s head. *sigh*

The rest of the meal was uneventful… Milady ordered up another drink for herself that never appeared. and I was too annoyed to look at the bill at the specifics. She did look at it to ensure I wasn’t double-tipping him though. Good girl… had forgotten they like to automatically tack on that 20% gratuity for larger groups even if they don’t totally deserve it. I think he managed to keep everyone else’s drinks filled for most part… just the two of us got boned on our drinks.

What else was there? One of the meals had capers even though no one could figure out why there were capers in it. I think they use capers just to use them… “hey look, I have this huge fuckin’ jar of capers and they must be used before the end of the weekend. Put them into EVERYTHING!!!!” It just did not make sense… but whatever. At least there weren’t any capers in my meal… and no dark brown sauce that made my eyes water and my mouth cuss me out for eating liquid wasabi…

In the end though… for the most part except for the rather shoddy service the food wasn’t that horrible. Scary Teddy’s Parmesan Encrusted Tilapia was delicious. Not sure on the other meals since I didn’t venture that close to the other side of the table.
Would I go back? Don’t know… I tend to think that if I’m going to get crappy service at a restaurant that I’ll continue to get crappy service at that restaurant. And it’s about the individual restaurant even if they are part of a chain. P.F. Chang’s at Garden Walk, good food and good service. P.F. Chang’s at the Irvine Spectrum? Sub-par food and crappy service.

Next time I’d rather subject myself to the horrible theme restaurant a couple of doors down if I’m eating lunch or wait until Roy’s Hawaiian Fusion Restaurant opens it’s doors in the evening.
So lesson to be learned from this? If they run out of the beer of your choice rather quickly, leave immediately because it’s not going to get any better.
