let’s see what Anaheim did at the trade deadline…
for a 3rd round draft pick we got defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron from the New York Islanders… he’s fuckin’ 5′ 10″… playing on defense… really? No one can quite make sense of this one.
for a 7th round draft pick we got goaltender J.S. Aubin from the LA Kings. Even the Kings fans are asking why? This is not a great goaltender… he even got smoked in the “Yo Momma”-off against Buffalo’s Ryan Miller…
Makes me wonder if Jonas Hiller might be making his way to the Portland Pirates just in time for the AHL playoffs. I definitely don’t see Aubin getting bumped down to the AHL level…
Lots of other moves today… a lot of them happening over in the Western Conference with teams trying to beef up prior to the playoffs to be able to match the Red Wings and the Ducks. Can I just tell you that I love hearing the analysts on TSN talking positively about the Anaheim Ducks to the point that they are picking Anaheim again this season?
Anyway… here goes:
The killer deal of the day: Marion Hossa from the Atlanta Thrashers for 2 players, a prospect, and a 1st round draft pick to the Pittsburgh Penguins. I think this is a joke of a deal. Pittsburgh gave up what could possibly be a costly trade for them in the long run. They have no hopes of signing Hossa in the off-season and still be able to re-sign Malkin… a VERY short-term deal for Pittsburgh that could bite them in the ass in the next couple of months. Does this trade make them even more of a threat in the playoffs? Possibly. Hossa is a great scorer but I’m not sure what to think when Crosby comes back how that chemistry will play out.
To the Dallas Stars: Brad Richards from the Tampa Bay Lightning… an interesting exchange as Tampa Bay is trying to rebuild. A definite beef-up for Dallas… could prove to be interesting for Anaheim if they have to face each other in the playoffs.
To the San Jose Sharks: Brian “Soupy” Campbell from the Buffalo Sabres for a forward and a 1st round draft pick. Lose a forward and pick up a defenseman. Campbell wasn’t overly thrilled with the trade and was rather emotional in a press conference this morning. Again, we see teams in the Western Conference beefing up to have to face Anaheim and/or Detroit in the playoffs.
To the Colorado Avalanche: they signed Peter Forsberg yesterday… and today brought back Adam Foote from the Columbus Blue Jackets. What’s next? Bringing back Patrick Roy? Get Rob Blake from the LA Kings? Seriously… this stinks of Colorado trying to get back to their glory days with players who from yesteryear. I’m sure when this was all going down this morning there were former Avs who were wondering if they could swing a deal to go back to their old stomping grounds.
The uncertainty of all of this though? Forsberg… if he can’t get into shape and stay healthy then this is a bad experience for the Avs and their fans. I respect Forsberg for wanting to go back to the team where it all started for him… but I’d have rather him not return due to the fact he might fuck up his foot even more by playing.
Definite sellers today…
Toronto Maple Leafs… dumping players and getting draft picks. Smart move. Sorry that Mats Sundin wouldn’t waive his no-trade clause, but you can’t bitch too much. He’s dedicated to the team. Analysts and Toronto fans aren’t overly joyed with Sundin… but respect his choice to stay.
Columbus Blue Jackets… dumping players for picks and prospects. Adam Foote to Colorado… the prima donna Sergei Federov to Washington…
Tampa Bay Lightning… doing some exchanges with a couple of teams. Definitely in re-build mode for them.
Buyers:
Washington Capitals… who expected them to go for goaltender Cristobal Huet from Montreal? This one had everyone scratching their head. And as mentioned above they got Federov from Columbus. I think that they now have like five or six Russian players on their team now… is this the new Red Curtain?
more later maybe… been a long day of trying to stay caught up on the trades and whatnot and making sense of this mess… plus doing my regular work. I pity the fool who dares to ignore the work that he is paid for… oh wait, that’s me about 75% of the time ^_~
